Earth’s oblateness and its temporal variations

چکیده

The oblateness is a fundamental property of the Earth under stable rotation. Different oblateness parameters can be defined, each having its physical significance. We retrace the main developments in concept as well as in measurement toward a qualitative understanding of the oblateness and particularly of J2, the so-called oblateness coefficient that ‘glues’ together distinct concepts of oblateness. We examine the numerical values and discuss the dynamical and geometrical consequences of the oblateness. Finally, we report the recent findings of the variations in J2, including an outstanding multi-year anomaly that occurred since 1998, leading to a discussion of possible cause(s) in terms of large-scale mass transports in the Earth’s atmosphere–hydrosphere–cryosphere–solid Earth–core system. The rotational and gravitational signature of the December 26, 2004 Sumatran earthquake

Besides generating seismic waves, which eventually dissipate, an earthquake also generates a static displacement field everywhere within the Earth. This global displacement field rearranges the Earth’s mass thereby causing the Earth’s rotation and gravitational field to change. The size of this change depends upon the magnitude, focal mechanism, and location of the earthquake. The Sumatran eart...

Multi-Observations Initial Orbit Determination based on Angle-Only Measurements

A new approach with the ability to use the multiple observations based on the least square approach has been proposed for initial orbit determination. This approach considers the Earth’s Oblateness by using the developed Lagrange coefficients. The efficiency of the proposed method has been tested in two scenarios. The first scenario is to use the simulated and the second one is to utilize the r...

Solar Interior Rotation and its Variation

This article surveys the development of observational understanding of the interior rotation of the Sun and its temporal variation over approximately forty years, starting with the 1960s attempts to determine the solar core rotation from oblateness and proceeding through the development of helioseismology to the detailed modern picture of the internal rotation deduced from continuous helioseism...

The Detectability of Transit Depth Variations Due to Exoplanetary Oblateness and Spin Precession

Knowledge of an exoplanet’s oblateness and obliquity would give clues about its formation and internal structure. In principle, a light curve of a transiting planet bears information about the planet’s shape, but previous work has shown that the oblateness-induced signal will be extremely difficult to detect. Here we investigate the potentially larger signals due to planetary spin precession. T...

Temporal variations in the Earth’s gravity field with emphasis on atmospheric effects

The determination of the Earth’s gravity field is the main goal of the dedicated gravity field missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE. The gravity field comprises always a static part and a much smaller timevariable one in the order of millimeters to centimeters, if expressed in geoid heights. As the measurements always consist of both parts, one has to separate them to get a highly accurate static fie...
